L'histoire de la montagne Vrysinas commence à partir du Moyen-Minoen, quand à son sommet était un grand sanctuaire. Aujourd'hui au même endroit se trouve une église dédiée à l'Esprit Saint préservant la sainteté de l'endroit.Au cours des fouilles, on a trouvé de nombreuses figurines et offrandes votives d'argile. Selon la tradition, la montagne a pris son nom des nombreuses fontaines et robinets d'eau (vrissi) des villages qui l'entourent.Armeni est un village avec le cimetière Minoen tardif (12ème siècle avant J.C.), qui est le plus grand cimetière de pierres tombales sculptées en Crète.

.Ce parcours (Prases - Armeni) fait partie du parcours européen E4 avec une longueur totale de 15 km et nécessite environ 5 heures à compléter.La basilique chrétienne de Goulediana datant du 6ème ou 7ème siècle est une basilique à trois ailes avec une belle décoration en mosaïque et est située au sud-est du village Goulediana à la pointe Onythe.

.Chromonastiri est un village où l'on doit visiter la magnifique Villa Claudio, appelée aussi -Konaki, comme il a servi de résidence officielle pendant la domination ottomane, et d'autres bâtiments vénitiens.

.Vous verrez également les églises byzantines de Panagia Kera et Agios Eftichios avec des fresques du 11ème et 14ème siècle, qui sont considérées comme les plus anciennes peintures murales connues en Crète.

.Chromonastiri a reçu le prix "Cleaner Organized Traditional Settlement" du Comité pour la promotion du tourisme de la préfecture de Rethymno.

Gallos est le village où se trouve le campus universitaire.Il est à proximité de Rethymno. Dans un peu plus loin du centre du village et sur le chemin de Atsipopoulo est le monastère restauré de Pierre et Paul.Les témoignages écrits sur l'histoire du monastère n'existent pas, alors que les traditions abondent. C'est une partie sacrée du monastère d'Arkadi.

Goulediana est un village à 18 km de Rethymno et à 530 mètres d'altitude.Elle a une riche histoire. Le nom Goulediana a été rapporté comme une banlieue de Rethymno pendant la domination vénitienne. Dans le village de Goulediana il y a des ruines d'une fontaine proarchaïque et une maison archaïque.

.Basilique chrétienne primitive de Goulediana
Cette basilique chrétienne à trois ailes, riche en mosaïques, a été découverte à Onythe, au sud-est du village de Goulediana, situé à 18 km de Rethymno.Elle date du VIe ou du VIIe siècle. A Goulediana il y a aussi un monument important de la première période byzantine, la basilique de Gouledanes et Agia Kyriaki, construit en 1787, une église avec un sanctuaire caverneux.Kapediana est un village traditionnel et a une vue magnifique sur la mer Crétoise.A l'entrée de ce village verdoyant avec une petite rivière qui coule du mont de Vrissinas, il y a une fontaine ottomane avec une inscription ottomane. En dehors du village se trouve l'église de Sotiras Christos.La grotteLatsida (Sotira Christou)- alt: 380m, loc: Sotira Christou, au nord-est de Kapediana, 30x2x10. Dans la grotte il y a des gravures importantes.Prass maintient l'architecture vénitienne mariée au paysage naturel luxuriant. Le Comité de promotion du tourisme de la préfecture de Rethymno lui a décerné le prix « Établissement traditionnel organisé plus propre ».Dans le village, on identifie les restes de trois forts deottomans.L'un d'eux, près du barrage de la rivière et du pont de Sima, est l'une des attractions monumentales qui, avec les bâtiments vénitiens du village, éveillent l'attention du visiteur ainsi que l'ancien aquaduc vénitienavec sa fontaine et les auges.En prenant la route de Rethymno qui mène au village de Gallos, où se trouve le campus universitaire, vous continuez au sud jusqu'au cimetière Minoen III d'Armeni.Puis la route continue jusqu'à Chromonastiri. Il vaut la peine de s'arrêter à la chapelle byzantine de la Vierge Marie de Keras.

Le chemin de terre mène à Prasses d'où il continue vers le sud vers le barrage de Potami.Peu après le beau pont de Prasses, une fourche à droite mène à Mirthio un village vert dans la nature qui prend son nom de la plante Mirtia.

.Puis la route passe par les villages d'élevage de Seli, Goulediana, où le site archéologique d'Onithe est situé à proximité, Kare et Armeni d'où la route principale descend à Rethymno.

Vrysinas Route

Vrysinas mountain's history begins from the Middle Minoan Ages, when at its peak was a great sanctum. Today at the same place is situated a church dedicated to the Holy Spirit preserving the sanctity of the place. During excavations, they were found numerous figurines and votive offerings of clay. According the tradition, the mountain took its name from the numerous fountains and water faucets (vrissi) of the villages around it.
Armeni is a village with the Late Minoan cemetery (12th century b.c.), which is the largest cemetery of carved tombstones in Crete.

This walking route (Prases - Armeni) constitutes part of the European trail E4 with a total length of 15km and needs around 5 hours to be completed. The early Christian basilica of Goulediana dating to the 6th or 7th century is a three-aisled basilica with a beautiful mosaic ornamentation and is situated southeast of the village Goulediana at the point Onythe.

Chromonastiri is a village where one should visit the magnificent Villa Claudio, called also “Konaki”, as it served as an official residence during the Ottoman domination, and other Venetian Buildings.

You will also see the Byzantine churches of Panagia Kera and Agios Eftichios with frescoes from the 11th and 14th century, which are considered as the oldest known murals in Crete.

Gallos is the village where the university campus is located. It is at a near distance from Rethymno. In a little bit further from the center of the village and on the way to Atsipopoulo is the restored Monastery of Peter and Paul. Written testimonies about the history of the Monastery do not exist, while traditions abound. It is a sacred part of Arkadi Monastery.

Goulediana is a village 18km away from Rethymno and at an altitude of 530 meters. It has a rich history. The name Goulediana was reported as a suburb of Rethymno during the Venetian domination. In the village of Goulediana there are ruins of a proarchaic fountain and an archaic house.

Early Christian basilica of Goulediana
This three-aisled early Christian basilica with rich mosaic ornaments was discovered at Onythe, southeast of the village of Goulediana, which is located 18km away from Rethymno.
It dates to the 6th or the 7th century. In Goulediana there is also an important monument of the first Byzantine period, the Basilica of Gouledanes and Agia Kyriaki, built in 1787, a church with a cavernous sanctuary.

Kapediana is a traditional village and has a magnificent view to the Cretan Sea. At the entrance of this green village with a small passing river that flows from the Mount of Vrissinas, there is an Ottoman fountain with an Ottoman inscription. Outside of the village is the church of Sotiras Christos.

The caveLatsida (Sotira Christou)- alt: 380m, loc: Sotira Christou, north-east of Kapediana, 30x2x10. In the cave there are important engravings. Prasses maintain the Venetian architecture married to the lush natural landscape. It was awarded the "Cleaner Organized Traditional Settlement" award by the Committee for Tourism Promotion of the Prefecture of Rethymno. In the village, the remains of three “koule” (ottoman forts) are identified. One of them, near the River Dam and the Sima Bridge, is one of the monumental attractions that along with the Venetian buildings of the village spark the attention of the visitor as well as the old Venetian aquaduct with its fountain and the troughs.

Taking the road from Rethymno which leads to the village of Gallos, where the University Campus is situated, you continue south reaching the Late Minoan III cemetery of Armeni. Then the route continues to Chromonastiri. It is worth stopping over at the Byzantine chapel of the Virgin Mary of Keras.

The dirt road leads to Prasses from where it continues south toward the Potami Dam. Shortly after the beautiful bridge of Prasses, a fork to the right leads to Mirthio a green village in nature that takes its name from the plant Mirtia.

Then the route passes through the livestock farming villages of Seli, Goulediana, where the archaeological site of Onithe is situated nearby, Kare and Armeni from where the main road descends to Rethymno.
