Rethymno verwandelt sich in eine Open-Air Galerie!
In diesem Mai verwandelt sich Rethymno in ein lebendes Open-Air-Studio, in dem die mit Spannung erwarteten "Sculpture Days" 2026 stattfinden.
Vom 8. bis 20. Mai lädt die Stadt Bewohner und Besucher ein, hinter die Kulissen des künstlerischen Prozesses zu treten und zu erleben, wie die alte Kunst des Marmorschnitzens zum Leben erweckt wird.
Eine einzigartige Zusammenarbeit mit der Athens School of Fine Arts
Diese Initiative ist eine prestigeträchtige Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Gemeinde Rethymno, die von Vizebürgermeister Manos Tsakonas koordiniert wird, und dem Marmorbildhauerlabor der Athener Kunstschule (ASFA). Zehn talentierte Schüler der Schule sind nach Rethymno gereist, um unter der Leitung des renommierten Bildhauers und Laborleiters Dimitris Christogiannis zu arbeiten.
Die "Skulpturentage" sind Teil einer breiteren Vision, kleine Festivals und kulturelle Feiern zu etablieren, die jede Form von Kunst direkt zu den Menschen bringen.
Das Thema: "Ideon Cave" (Ideon Andron)
Die Inspiration für den diesjährigen Workshop ist tief in der kretischen Geschichte und Mythologie verwurzelt: Die Ideon-Höhle.
Bekannt als der mythische Geburtsort von Zeus, stellt die Höhle ein mächtiges Symbol für Geburt, Schutz und die alten Wurzeln der Insel dar.
Die Künstler werden dieses Thema durch Stein interpretieren und zehn einzigartige Skulpturen schnitzen, die das Geheimnis und die Majestät der Psiloritis-Berge widerspiegeln.

Was "Sculpture Days" wirklich besonders macht, ist seine interaktive Natur. Anstatt eine fertige Statue in einer Galerie zu sehen, wird die Öffentlichkeit ermutigt, die Kunststation in Rethymno während der Arbeitszeit zu besuchen.
Besucher können den rhythmischen Klang des Meißels hören, den feinen Marmorstaub in der Luft sehen und zusehen, wie rohe Steinblöcke langsam in ausdrucksstarke Kunstwerke verwandelt werden. Rethymno Transforms into an Open-Air Gallery!
This May, Rethymno transforms into a living open-air studio as it hosts the highly anticipated "Sculpture Days" 2026 .
From May 8th to May 20th , the city invites residents and visitors to step behind the scenes of the artistic process and witness the ancient art of marble carving come to life.
A Unique Collaboration with the Athens School of Fine Arts
This initiative is a prestigious collaboration between the Municipality of Rethymno, Department of Culture coordinates by vice mayor Manos Tsakonas and the Marble Sculpture Laboratory of the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA) . Ten talented students from the School have traveled to Rethymno to work under the guidance of the renowned sculptor and lab supervisor, Dimitris Christogiannis .
The "Sculpture Days" are part of a broader vision to establish small-scale festivals and cultural celebrations that bring every form of art directly to the people.
The Theme: "Ideon Cave" (Ideon Andron)
The inspiration for this year’s workshop is deeply rooted in Cretan history and mythology: The Ideon Cave .
Known as the mythical birthplace of Zeus, the cave represents a powerful symbol of birth, protection, and the ancient roots of the island.
The artists will interpret this theme through stone, carving ten unique sculptures that reflect the mystery and majesty of the Psiloritis mountains.

It is a rare opportunity to engage with the artists, ask questions, and understand the physical and creative labor involved in sculpture.
