What is the Blue Flag?

The Blue Flag is one of the world’s most recognized environmental labels. It is not just a "participation prize"—it is a gold standard awarded only to beaches that meet 33 strict criteria .

When you see a Blue Flag flying in Rethymno, it guarantees that the beach is:

Clean & Pure:  The water quality is scientifically tested and monitored throughout the season.

Safe & Well-Organized:  Professional lifeguards, first-aid equipment, and clear safety boards are always present.

Accessible to All:  These beaches prioritize accessibility, offering ramps and facilities for people with disabilities.

Environmentally Mindful:  The beach is managed with total respect for nature, including recycling programs and the protection of local ecosystems.

Sustainability is a team effort! Whether you are a local resident or a guest visiting from afar, you can help us maintain these high standards:

Use the Bins:  Always dispose of your trash in the provided recycling and waste bins.

Respect the Nests:  If you see a protected sea turtle nesting site (usually marked by a wooden cage), please keep a safe distance.

Follow the Flags:  Always pay attention to the safety flags and instructions provided by our professional lifeguards.
